Quantum Consulting Engineers performed the structural design for a new science facility for the Columbia Springs Environmental Education Science Facility. A field-trip destination for more than 10,000 Southwest Washington students a year, the center is designed to promote environmental stewardship and the environmental sciences by immersing school children in this spectacular setting.
The owner’s take advantage of the unique characteristics of the site, inspiring visitors to recognize and care for the environment. Unique features such as a ‘wet roof’ and ‘wet wall’, both with wetland vegetation, a window that cuts into the earth to reveal root structures, and a ‘fish-theater’ with underwater viewing are all designed to engage the visitor and interpret the site’s natural processes. Lofty sustainability goals include a net-zero energy use and a LEED Platinum rating.
