King County Youth Services Center

King County Youth Services Center

Seattle, WA

Quantum Consulting Engineers provided structural engineering for the addition to and seismic upgrade of a youth detention services building. The facility is a five-story, 64,000 SF facility housing courtrooms and administrative offices. The seismic upgrade included concrete shear wall and floor/wall ties. The addition included a 2,000 SF entryway, an elevator, and security improvements.

Montenay Superheater Upgrade

Montenay Superheater Upgrade

Burnaby, BC

Quantum Consulting Engineers provided structural engineering for the boiler superheater upgrade project at the Burnaby MSW Plant in British Columbia. Montenay Inc. operates a municipal solid waste incinerator plant. The goal of the project was to improve the plant’s energy efficiency by raising the steam temperature of their three boilers to an efficient level for the plant’s new steam turbine-generator. This required process and design engineering for the new superheater and boiler pressure part modifications.

One of the structural design challenges involved supporting the new 100,000-pound superheater’s gravity and seismic loads from the top of the existing boilers’ upper sidewall headers. This was required to accommodate the upward expansion of the 50-foot tall bottom supported boilers. Dual purpose transportation and lifting cradles were also designed by Quantum to support the 40-foot long superheater sections during shipping and erection by overhead crane down through the roof of the building.

International Paper Company Power Boiler Superheater, Header & Support Modifications

Ticonderoga, NY

Quantum Consulting Engineers provided structural engineering services for this boiler upgrade project at the International Paper Company plant in Ticonderoga, New York. The structural portion of the work included substantial revisions to the boilers superheater by replacing the existing internal tubes with new material as well as adding several banks of new tubes with an increased weight of over 120,000 pounds.

The existing and new tubes are about 35 feet long reach temperatures of up to 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit and are suspended from above by a new header pipes which are intern suspended from the buildings existing beams and columns. Additional building support steel was added directly above the boiler and existing beams were reinforced to carry the new loads.

Odyssey Elementary School

Odyssey Elementary School

Mukilteo, WA

Quantum Consulting Engineers provided structural engineering for a new elementary school in Mukilteo, WA. The 650-student school is designed with community and adaptability in mind in every space. Classroom clusters, administrative offices, and student services branch off from the centralized lobby/entry. The campus includes flexible spaces for special programming, movable partitions, a library and media center easily accessible by the public, a parent center, gymnasium, and a commons area for performances, presentations, and student lunches. Outside, there is ample parking, as well as outdoor learning areas near the preserved wetlands.

Quantum Consulting Engineers provided structural design for a new 1,000-student campus constructed of CMU and steel. To accommodate neighborhood needs, the school initially serves only ninth graders, with plans to expand to a full middle school in the future.

The school also includes an outdoor athletic field, and in the northwest quadrant, a separate library with typical features such as high-bay construction with extensive glazing around the perimeter, sunscreens, and interior soffits.
